GLOSSARY Term & Definition --AND (&): Listed under the step counts (beats) = half of a quick count (1 & or & 1). --BRUSH: To give a light stroke (sweep) the ball of foot against the floor. --CHARLESTON: A step pattern with 4 county. 1) Step forward left; 2) Kick right forward; 3) Step back on the right; 4) Point the left back. --CROSSWALK/STRUT: Crossing/stepping one foot over the other (takes 2 counts). --DIP: A slight bend of the support knee with the other knee straight. --DRAG: To bring the free foot slowly together to the support foot (1-4 counts). --FOOT BOOGIE: Point and swival both toes apart/out. Pivot & swival both heels apart/out. Point and swival heels in and together. Pivot and swival both toes in and together (takes 4 counts). --FOOT TWIST: Pivot/swival right toes out to the right side, keeping toes there, swival heel out to the right side. Swival heels back in towards center, then swival toes back in to starting position (takes 54 counts). --HEEL FAN: [Feet together, toes stay in place.] With heel of one foot fan heel out to the right side 90 degrees. (right=3:00; left=9:00) keeping toes on floor. Fan heel back in & together (@ 6:00) (take 2 counts.) --HEEL GRIND: Place the heel of one foot on the floor and twist your toes from inward to outward (takes 2 counts). --HEEL HOOK: Tap the heel of the free foot forward. Cross it in front of weighted foot, lifting as you cross (takes 2 counts). Often followed by a heel step. --HEEL STAND: Life both heels off the floor by bending knees, toes apart. Return heels to the floor (takes 2 counts). --HEEL STRUT: Touching heel forward, then slapping/snapping your toes to the ground (takes 2 counts). --HOLD: A count to describe a designated time before taking another step. --HOOK: The free foot moves as a pendulum in front or back of the weighted foot and is kept off the floor. --HOP: To make a short jump/leap on one foot usually with free knee/(foot) being lifted or bent. --JAZZ BOX: 1) Cross right over left; 2) Step back left; 3) Out to the side step right; 4) Step left beside right (usually a 4 count pattern with either foot starting). --KICK: A lift leg movement with the leg straight. --KICK-BALL-CHANGE: Small kick forward on one foot. Bringing that same foot back for a quick step on the ball of that foot, stepping on other foot (count as 1 & 2). [Kick ball step] --KNEE POPS: Pop one knee out (lifting that heel up), other foot heel taps. Then alternate legs (2 counts each). --KNEE ROLLS: To swing a knee out to the side and back into place, lifting heel (takes 2 counts). --LOCK: A tight cross of feet. --PADDLE TURN: Use free foot to push like a scooter around 4 times (each push taking 2 counts). Turning 1/4. Swing hip out with each push (8 counts total). --PIGEON TOES: Weight is on the balls of both feet. Feet are together. To start -- push heels apart (to spread) and go up on toes on count 1. Then bring heels together and back down to floor on count 2. --POINT: To aim/direct (point) the free foot forward, back, out to side, or crosswise. --REVERSE HOOK: Free foot moves out to side, heel up, toes down towards floor, usually follows a Heel Hook. --ROLL: 360 degree turn right/left in 3 steps on an invisible line. --SCUFF: To brush the heel of foot against the floor. --SHUFFLE/TRIPLE: A triple rhythm or polka step: step, together, step. (Triple is usually done in place, shuffle is usually done moving (count as 1 & 2, 3 & 4). --SLIDE: A movement in any direction. A step on one foot, and draw the other foot up to the first. --STOMP: To hit the floor with the whole foot. You may step on the foot and take weight or rebound and be able to use the same foot for next movement. --STRUT: Moving forward placing 1st the heel to the floor for the 1st count, then the ball of the foot slapping down to the floor for the 2nd count. --SWIVAL HEELS: Pivot both heels out to the side, right or left and back to the center. --TAP: The heel or toe of free foot strikes lightly or touches the floor without a weight change. --TOE FAN: Feet are together to start. As one foot takes the weight the other foot keeps heel in place and moves or swings the toes (of that one foot) out to side 90 degrees and back to the center. --TOUCH: The toe or heel of the free foot taps/hits(touches) the floor without a weight change. --VINE: A continuous traveling side step with crosses behind and/or in front - example right, step behind(left), right, touch left [left, step behind(right), left, touch right]. --WALTZ: Step in proper direction, right, 2, 3 (or left, 2, 3) - example: left, right, left (or right, left, right) --WIGGLE WALKS: Step one foot forward, wiggling like jello or hip bumping in 2 counts.
